Vid Cousins is an audio producer, sound designer, mix engineer, and composer with an impressive international career in music, film, digital arts, and education that spans over two decades.
He has been sought out by many award winning artists for their projects including Squarepusher, Kid Koala, Amon Tobin, FOXTROTT, Colin Stetson, Esmerine and ‘!!!’.
Cousins has composed, arranged, produced and recorded for some astounding ensembles over the years, notably Afiara Quartet (Young Canadians Musicians Award winners), Kronos Quartet (Grammy Award winners), Bell Orchestre (Juno Award winners), and the ever evolving Sevens Project Ensemble including members of Arcade Fire, Stars, and The Patrick Watson Band.
He has worked alongside many great producers and engineers including Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Super Furry Animals), Al Fisch (Bjork, Art of Noise), Charlie Francis (R.E.M.), Brian Rose (Robbie Williams) and Lewis Taylor. His studio production career began in the UK in 1995 as an assistant engineer at ‘The Dairy’ recording studios in Brixton, London. The varied projects at this establishment ranged from Real World recordings through to the mix production on Deep Purple’s Live in Europe 1996 album.
Since then, he has toured internationally on four continents as the live sound mix engineer for artists such as Squarepusher, Bell Orchestre, !!!, Tim Hecker and Diplo including working with local teams to advance technical needs.
He worked on Kid Koala’s GAMIQ award winning album 12 Bit Blues (2012) and IPPY Gold Medal winning Space Cadet (2011), Esmerine’s Juno Award nominated Lost Voices (2015), and Kid Koala and Emiliana Torrini's Juno-nominated Music To Draw To: Satellite (2018), as well as animated short films including Jonathan Ng’s Academy Award-shortlisted Requiem for Romance (2012), David Barlow-Krelina’s Canadian Academy Nominated, NFB-produced Caterpillarplasty (2018), VANOC's Vancouver Cultural Olympiad official trailer and Rhombus Media's Zoom (2015) feature film.
Cousins was the sound designer for films such as Munro Ferguson's 3-D (also domified for the SATosphère and extended to ambisonic VR) NFB film Minotaur, restored audio clips for the recreation of a Norman McLaren animated short for Luigi Allemano and the NFB, and was a foley artist and location recording engineer collaborating with Amon Tobin for his critically-acclaimed Foley Room (2017) album.
He is also the musical director and arranger of multi-disciplinary productions such as Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall - a musical theatre work during which a cast of puppets is filmed moving through miniature sets, edited and projected to create a live feature film, scored by Kid Koala on turntables and electronics and a string quartet - now in its 10th year of touring.
He is the owner and chief recording engineer at Monkey Puzzle Sound Studios, a full-range audio production facility providing specialized sound services for creative projects in film, music and the digital arts Including surround sound mix, sound design, audio editing and restoration, voice-over, foley and music recording.
