TIM HECKER

  • Tim Hecker is a Juno Award-winning Canadian composer, producer, and sound artist. He is known internationally for experimental ambient recordings
released under his own name and soundtracks. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for Kranky, Alien8, Mille Plateaux, Room40, Force Inc, Staalplaat, and Fat Cat. Initially recording under the Jetone moniker, he started his own name with the release of Haunt Me in 2001.

Hecker inhabits a unique intersection between noise, dissonance, and melody. In his varied and celebrated works, digital and organic sources tightly intertwine. Over his career he has moved through shades of reflective electronic noise, experiential sound design, and modern composition with a deft and distinguished touch. Cultivating enigmatic, uneasy soundscapes, the beauty and crush of Hecker's sonically processed noise has been compared to "tectonic color plates" and "cathedral electronic music."

He has released eleven albums and a number of EPs, with No Highs (2023) being his latest. He has collaborated with artists such as Ben Frost, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Daniel Lopatin. His Imaginary Country (2009) and Virgins (2014) were longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, and Ravedeath, 1972 (2011) was awarded a Juno for Electronic Album of the Year.

Tim Hecker is an extensive, vigorous live performer, and the immense power and menace of his live shows makes him a contemporary master of volume and texture. Hecker has presented his work live internationally, including performances at Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek (Montreal), Impakt Festival (Utrecht), Victoriaville in (Quebec), IDEAL (Nantes), Vancouver New Music Festival (Vancouver), and Transmediale (Berlin).

In addition to his solo works, Hecker has worked on a wide range of projects, from installations with the likes of Doug Aitken and Stan Douglas to score work for contemporary dance and film projects. Hecker composed the score for Jason Lew's The Free World which premiered at Sundance in 2016, Peter Brunner's Luzifer (2021), the BBC Two drama series The North Water (2021) directed by Andrew Haigh, and most recently Brandon Cronenberg's Infinity Pool (2023).
