SPACE CADET HEADPHONE CONCERT
-
Space Cadet is a 132-page graphic novel drawn entirely on etchboards, accompanied by a still picture score composed and recorded by Kid Koala on piano, bass, viola and multiple turntables. This charming story of an adventurous astrophysicist/ space explorer and her guardian robot touches on the relationship between technology and isolation, celebrating connectivity through family, and finding your place in the universe.
Audience members are seated in inflatable "space pods" surrounded by paintings of canyons from foreign planets, and equipped with their own set of headphones. Kid Koala introduces the characters, stories and music from his Space Cadet graphic novel and soundtrack, followed by a set of delicate instrumental lullabies performed on piano, turntable and electronics. Accompanying the performance are projections of images and animations from the graphic novel. Before the show, the audience is invited to explore the Space Cadet science fair/ gallery to view original artwork from the book, sculptures, and interactive sound/art installations inspired by the book. -

"A mix of sentimental Wurlitzer, Enoβs Apollo ambience, Philip Jeckian drones and frenetic scratching; Cadet is gorgeous β maybe even his most mature work to date" - Christopher R. Weingarten, SPIN
"Highlights of the graceful space lullaby provide an architecture to the show. San himself is the wizard of it all, but he doesn't attract attention to himself. Rather, it's the overall multidimensional experience that matters." - Brad Wheeler, The Globe and Mail
