Rebecca Foon is a Juno award-winning composer, cellist, singer, artist, and producer performing and recording in a wide array of contexts for over two decades. In 2014, Foon co-founded Pathways to Paris, a non-profit devoted to expanding awareness and action around the Paris Agreement. In 2020, Foon began developing Ascension as a natural extension of her artistic and musical practices with climate activism.
Ascensionβs large-scale lightboxes transport viewers into a mesmerizing realm where the natural world converges with architectural space, creating captivating portals to the environment we are rapidly losing. Ascension is a plea for collective responsibility, emphasizing the interconnectedness between art, nature, and the need for global climate conservation in an era where we are facing the devastating impacts of climate change. These light boxes are not only portals to the awe inspiring biodiversity that surrounds us but also reminders of the potential future we must strive to avoid β a world where the only traces of nature lie in photographs and memories.
The accompanying neoclassical composition is an ode to nature and its fragility, narrativizing the viewer's environment. The music is the weather that moves the experience from sombre to stormy, to the sun breaking through. Cello, piano, double bass and violin intermingle in a neoclassical, romantic, dream-like style through 5 distinct movements over its 30-minute durationβexpressed though a multi-speaker array as spatialized audio, enveloping the entire space. Subtly balancing elements of light and darkness, Ascension aims for an emotional response that oscillates between the sublime and magical, the sorrowful and resilient, the mournful and optimistic that we experience in our transforming climate. The Ascension project continues to evolve, with forthcoming iterations currently in development.
